The most awe-inspiring and famous Mayan ruins is the expansive site of Tikal. This lost city is a stunning collection of temples for visitors to enjoy and explore. Some of these are so tall they stretch all the way from the jungle floor to emerge above the tree canopy. You can spend a whole day here, appreciating the architectural skill, immersing yourself in Mayan history and discovering the wildlife that lives in the rainforest surrounding the vast pyramids. In addition to Tikal, there are many other secret, hidden temples in the lush jungle of the El Peten region for you to discover.

Antigua, the original capital of Guatemala, is a beautiful colonial city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Under the watchful gaze of the Agua, Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes, the city's position is exceptional, and it’s an excellent stop on a tour of Guatemala. Wander the cobbled streets, admire the impressive buildings and sit in one of the plazas, relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere.

If you know your birds then spotting the national quetzal will be high on your list for your Guatemala adventure. The best place to spot these beautiful birds is the Verapaces, in the region surrounding the city of Coban.

Found at the end of a dramatic winding road, Lake Atitlan offers stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. We recommend spending some time here, and if possible taking a boat onto the lake to experience the best of the exceptional landscape. This region is home to many Mayan Indians, and the colourful villages here are fascinating. We recommend visiting a local market in order to get an genuine experience of life here. The large market at Chichicastenango is impressive and can be paired with a smaller, less touristy one to add variety.
